Muhammad Trims Arizona, UNLV Off List Of Suitors

Mar 29, 2012 10:38 AM

Arizona and UNLV are out of the race to sign basketball star Shabazz Muhammad

"It's at three right now, yeah," Muhammad said. "UCLA, Kentucky and Duke. Right now, those are probably the last three before I make my decision."

Muhammad, Naismith National Player of the Year, said he liked UNLV and Kansas, but wanted to be honest with coaches who kept ringing his phone.

"I just think it was the calls," Muhammad said. "The schools that I took out, I liked them, but I wasn't really interested in going. I didn't want to lead them on. I want them to do the best they can to recruit other players and not recruit me anymore. I just thought that was the mature thing to do."

Muhammad was awarded MVP honors Wednesday in the McDonald's All-American Game, scoring 21 points to lead the West to a 106-102 victory.

"When you come to every event, you want to be known as the best player at the event," he said. "Knowing everybody's talented, this is the elite 24, top 24 guys in the country, and just coming in knowing everybody's competing, competing is a beautiful thing."

Muhammad To Take Official Visit To UCLA, Make Decision Shortly Thereafter

Mar 19, 2012 10:21 AM

Shabazz Muhammad is scheduled to make an official visit to UCLA in early April.

“I think Coach [Ben] Howland wanted him to come at the beginning of April, for that weekend in the beginning April [6-8], but I know that’s close to the Jordan Game, so I have to look at those dates,” Muhammad’s father, Ron Holmes confirmed. “I’m not exactly sure but that’s when I’ve got it penciled in for.”

Muhammad, who is seriously considering UCLA, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky and UNLV, plans to announce his college decision within a week or two of his visit with the Bruins.

“That’s going to be our last official visit,” Holmes said of the UCLA visit. “Then I think he’s going to decide on the 9th or the 10th, something like that. He’ll do something at his high school [to announce].”

Joshua Smith Foregoing Draft, Returning For Junior Season

Mar 9, 2012 10:34 AM

Joshua Smith said he will return to UCLA for his junior season.

"I’m coming back," said Smith after the Bruins were knocked out of the Pac-12 tournament with a 66-58 loss to Arizona. "I can’t -- there’s no way I’ll ever leave on a note like that. Whenever I leave I want to make sure we go out with a bang and I go out with a bang, nothing like this."

Smith averaged just 10 points and 4.9 rebounds while being plagued by conditioning issues.

"I’m extremely upset with myself," he said. "I realized in the season with the way I was playing and my numbers compared to what they were when I was a freshman. I was supposed to make that jump and I didn’t.”

Smith said he realizes that he needs to work harder in the offseason to play at the level that made him a high school All-American.

"I've got to put in the work I know I can do," Smith said. "Last summer, after the season, I just basically chilled. I went home kind of chilled and went back to the season kind of the same. For me to be the kind of player I want to be and to be the player my team needs me to be, I need to put in the work in the offseason."
